Car cover

Our new neighbourhood is infested with stray cats. The entire row of terrace houses is mainly occupied by Malays so there are no dogs around. And that makes it a haven for stray cats. My neighbours, two houses away, has a habit of feeding them too which attracts even more stray cats.

One of the most annoying thing about cats is they come into our compound to pee and shit. They also have a habit of climbing up onto cars to laze around. This morning we woke up with a pile of cat shit on top of our car roof.

So we went to the car and truck accessories shop to buy a car cover which will be used every night to prevent cat leftovers on the car. My husband wanted to buy a machine gun but I calmed him down.

I wonder if we can complain to the municipality about huge number of stray cats in our back alley. If they put down stray dogs, they can do that to stray cats too?

Refridgerator water filters

I didn’t know there are dedicated water filters for the fridge. We had my uncle’s old fridge removed and sent away to the recyclers. As I was cleaning and sorting out the store room today, I found about half a dozen of new in box Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter 4396508. I don’t know how long water filters last or if they have an expiry date. Now that the fridge is gone, I won’t find any use for these water filters. Not unless I buy myself a Whirlpool refridgerator. But they look very new to be thrown away.

Why so expensive?

My dad has a very irritating habit of asking how much stuff cost. And whenever the stuff we bought is overpriced by a cents, you’ll hear him say “Why so expensive”?

This phrase drives my husband nuts. And sometimes the entire family too I admit. My dad always compare prices even if it costs no more than a few bucks. Not that it’s a bad thing but it gets annoying when a difference of a few cents and dollars, is made to sound like a big deal. Especially when he knows somewhere is selling at a cheaper price.

Come on. I mean, it’s not like we have time and energy to go around town, scouting the best price for insignificant items we’re buying just one-off. Do you think its worth your time wasting an entire day going shop by shop checking out prices for say, a mere $10 door lock? Knowing at most you can save is just two or three bucks?

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll all for shopping for the best prices and doing some due diligences when it comes to consuming. More so for stuff we consume regularly. But at times, we don’t have the luxury of time and convenience to compare prices. Especially when the need for something fairly urgent pops up.

Moving in to our house

After 2 weeks of cleaning up, fixing, repairing, organizing furnitures and lots of wiping, vacuuming and mopping … our house is ready for us to move in.

One of the main reasons of us hurrying out of our previous home, two months earlier than planned, is to avoid contact with family members as much as possible. Why? This might sound very paranoid to you, but I’m doing so because I’m scared of them contracting the dreaded influenza A(H1N1) and passing it on to us. Pregnant woman and children under 5 belongs to the high-risk group. The way I see it, I’m responsible for taking care of my 2-year-old Clarisse, myself and the little guy in my tummy. A(H1N1) fatality rate might be low, but I’m not taking any chances even if people see it as overreacting.

Anyway, I’m out of the in-law’s house and in to our own home. My stuff is strewn everywhere in the living room and I can’t even remember what I put into stacks of boxes. It’s going to take days to unpack, sort things out and adapt to lifestyle changes. I have to admit, I dread doing household chores and from this day onwards, it’s going to be me and my husband’s full responsibility.

With a newborn on the way and a terrible-two Clarisse wreaking havoc, I can’t imagine how busy, physically tiring and emotionally draining the next six month’s will be.

HDTV digital camcorders

We used a lousy digital camera’s built-in video recording function to shoot Clarisse being delivered. The resolution was 640 pixels by 480 pixels but the quality of the clip leaves much to be desired. It was not sharp and the picture is grainy. No match for today’s HDTVs at all. This time round, I’m going to borrow a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution digital camcorder from my sister to shoot Clarisse’s baby brother’s delivery. The videos shot from a proper HDTV digital camcorders, especially HDTV resolution ones such as hers, totally blows my digital camera’s video away.

House cleaning and progress

The house I’m about to move in very soon has just undergone a top to bottom spring cleaning. Thanks to my husband, parents, my mom-in-law, my grandma-in-law and their maid. The floor is now clean and we can walk around with our bare feet.

This week we rushed to install a new air conditioner in Clarisse and baby’s room. Fixed a new toilet bowl and took care of some plumbing works at the back of the house. But really, most of the time were spent re-arranging furnitures and a lot of scrubbing, wiping, mopping and vacuuming.

Things left undone which we’ll be rushing for the next few days:

  • Catching lizards with lizard traps
  • Installing mosquito nettings
  • Hiring someone to rid the garden and drain from lalang and grasses.
  • Installing a kitchen water filter
  • More mopping and vacuuming

That’s it I guess. But I’m really glad we’ve covered more than half the things planned this week. Cleaning up the house was really time-consuming and we really appreciate my in-laws for helping.

Mesothelioma lawsuits

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer cause by exposure to asbestos materials. There is no known cure for malignant Mesothelioma except surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. But it depends on a number of factors including the location of the disease, the stage of the disease, your age and your overall health. Although it is saddening to hear about mesothelioma suffering, it sickens us more to know that corporations manufactured and profited selling asbestos products being fully aware beforehand the health-threatening effects of asbestos. This led to numerous law-suits filed by mesothelioma patients against these irresponsible corporations. I commend these people for knowing their rights and fully utilising it against these corporations. Hopefully by doing so, we will foster a more responsible, consumer caring and healthy manufacturing practices.

Moving in to new home ASAP thanks H1N1

I’ve been following local H1N1 news closely and I won’t hide the fact that I’m quite worried about it. Seems to me everyday, the news is reporting one or two H1N1-related death. Being pregnant makes me high-risk and that is especially worrying.

Even though we are suppose to move into our new home in Oct, we’ve decided to do so much earlier. Preferrably by middle of August, just 2 more weeks to go. The house we’re staying now is occupied by my in-laws and grandmother. They go out every single day without fail. Of course, I can’t tell them to remain home as much as possible. Neither would they be bothered about H1N1, I can tell you. So us moving out is the best solution I guess.
