Clarisse day two in hospital

I didn’t manage to sleep much last night. Clarisse fever went up to 40 again at about 1am so I was up most of the night to observe her. I also received a call from my husband that baby Edward is having a fever too and that got me even more stressed out.

At 4am the nurse gave her Voltaren and that managed to bring her temperature down. The entire morning she was not feverish. I was feeling optimistic about her chances of being discharged later in the evening but my hopes were shortlived. Clarisse’s temperature shot up to 38.5 after noon. We will be staying for at least another day I’m afraid.

Clarisse fever, lose stool and coughing persists

Clarisse has been admitted for nearly 24 hours now. Her fever still spike frequently, loose stool persisting and coughing quite badly so the doctor advised us to stay another day.

The nurses has taken a sample of her stool to check upon doctor’s instruction. I would have to wait until tomorrow noon for a report.

We have moved from a 4-bedded room to single room for more privacy. Clarisse get awaken by the slightest noise so I hope she’d sleep better in single room.

Clarisse constantly insist on wanting to go home. She hates being confined in the hospital ward. Not a very pleasant place no doubt so we understand her being in a bad mood all the time.

I’m praying her fever would go away tomorrow. And with a bit of luck, Clarisse could be discharged by tomorrow evening. We will be so relieved.

Clarisse admitted to the hospital due to high fever, diarrhoea and vomitting

Clarisse is sound asleep next to me. I’m blogging on my iPad now, at the hospital children ward where she was admitted just an hour ago. The time now is 4am.

At 2am, We brought Clarisse to the hospital’s emergency clinic when her temperature spiked over 40 degrees celcius and vomitted all over her sheets when we gave her medicine. Earlier in the day, I gave her a suppository when her fever went to 39 degrees celcius. But in less than 6 hours, at around 1.30am, she was shivering in bed and her body felt very warm. She even threw up right after taking her fever medicine. We took her to the clinic immediately and the doctor advised us to admit her for the night for further observation.

Baby Edward still looks like a baby because he has little hair

Baby Edward is 19 months now. He hardly looks like a toddler because he has very little hair. This morning, Clarisse’s class teacher thought Edward was under 1 year old. It’s the same with everyone else who assume he’s just a big baby. It is funny when you see him walk and run. It’s like watching a baby do things beyond what babies are capable of.

Clarisse was pretty much the same. She had little hair when she was 1 and a half years old. Everyone thought he was a boy when she wore t-shirts and pants. Around two and a half years old, she started to grow more hair. And around three, it started to curl. Now at nearly four, Clarisse has a full head of hair with big curls. My only wish is the curls won’t turn in a frizzly mess like me. Let the curls remain the way it is, bigger loops and curls.

Clarisse slow eater

Meal times, especially dinner, are like a war zone. Lunch and dinner are two sessions of the day I dread most. Clarisse is a very fussy and slow eater. Every day I have to force her to eat her food. She’ll be 4 years old next month and for the past few months I’ve forced to her eat all by herself. I used to feed her because she refuses to eat but it can’t go on forever obviously. Even when I cane her or constantly yell at her, Clarisse takes no less than one hour to finish her bowl of rice. There is nothing you can do to make her gulp down her food at a pace normal human beings do.

The first thing people say to me is that Clarisse may not like the food I cook for her. Not really coz she still eat very slowly when we dine out, whatever food she eats. I’m losing this battle against her. I’m out of ideas.

An iPad for Clarisse

It’s been nearly a month since we bought an iPad. The original one not iPad 2. Apple cut a huge discount on the iPad when iPad 2 was announced, nearly 25% off the original price. Before the price cut, my husband wanted to wait for iPad 2 but changed his mind immediately after that. We anticipated the iPad would most probably end up as a gaming console for Clarisse and she’d spend more time on it than we do. The games and apps for her won’t need a faster CPU or graphics processor. So we decided to save the money by buying the original iPad and spend it on educational apps and games.

We bought the 16GB WiFi model, the lowest in the range. Clarisse was absolutely delighted when she saw we bought an iPad. Just days after she played with a demo unit at the shop. The touchscreen interface is very easy for kids to get used to. Within minutes, she’s playing games, jigsaw puzzles, mazes, drawing and coloring on the iPad.

Clarisse have been pestering us to let her play computer games. If she play games on our PCs, we would be wasting a lot of productivity time. We considered the PlayStation portable, Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS but educational apps and kiddie games are pretty limited. Not to mention quite expensive to buy. So the iPad is hands down the best choice for us. The iPad keeps her entertained and occupied at home and in the car.

Clarisse having a really bad cough

On Monday, we took Clarisse to her paediatrician because she was coughing really badly. In fact, I’ve never seen her cough so much in one day. She started to cough on Saturday and by Sunday morning, it was really bad. Never a minute went by without hearing her cough, except when she’s asleep. I was worried so I had her skipped school on Monday to go to the doctor.

Monday mornings are terrible at the doctor’s clinic. The queue was already 13 people long by 9am. We waited 1 and a half hours for our turn. Her doctor didn’t see anything serious, most likely a bacterial infection and prescribed an antibiotic along with the usual coughing meds. And she was sent to the nebulizer bay.

By evening, she’s still coughing quite badly. So my husband took her back to the hospital and went straight to the nebulizer bay with the doctor’s prescription. And again, the next morning. This time we had to sent her to the doctor’s clinic after the nebulizer room. We were told to finish the course of antibiotics given to her. And if her cough is gone by then, no need to return for another appointment.

Her last dose of antibiotics is tomorrow. Hopefully by then, she recovers from her cough.

But eversince she started kindergarten, not a week went by without a sniffle or two. It’s only a matter of time before she gets the cold again.

iPad’s Nomad brush water colour painting is impressive

While I was having lunch today with my husband, we saw someone painting a picture on her iPad. With a paintbrush! And each stroke paints exactly like real water colour. My husband knew about this so-called Nomad brush, I didn’t. This is the first time we saw a Nomad brush in action and it was impressive. Even for me, who doesn’t have much interest in technology gadgets, is blown away by how realistic the water colour picture it paints.

Seriously, if you have the slightest interest in painting, check out iPad’s Nomad brush. My bro-in-law’s birthday is 2 months away and we were wondering what to get him. After seeing Nomad brush up close, I think we have a pretty good idea what it’ll be. I think he’ll enjoy the Nomad brush.

Clarisse second tooth pulled

Clarisse had her second bad cavity extracted on her second visit to the child dental specialist.

She must remember her unpleasant experience having had her first tooth removed because as soon as she saw the dentist, she wanted to cry. But she knew she has no choice but to let the dentist check because her tooth has been giving her quite a lot of pain.

We were fairly certain there’s no choice but to have the tooth pulled. The cavity is the size of a sinkhole. And the dentist observed there’s some absess in the gums. So it wasn’t difficult to decide. Just difficult to bear with the sight of her going through another round of having her tooth pulled out.

This time she started to cry as soon as my husband held her tight. The procedure is the same – a swipe of medicinal cream, an injection to numb the gums, say some prayers, hold her head tight and hope the dentist make it quick. All over in less than 5 minutes.

The nurse took her out of the room. Gave her some cold water to drink and put a piece of gauze to absorb the blood. Switched on the cartoon channel to calm her down. Her hands were still shivering.

Her cavity ruined nearly half of her tooth. The dentist said doing a filling would be pointless judging from the state of her tooth. There are signs of infection down to the roots. Even with a perfect filling, it is very unlikely to save her tooth.

It’s been 3 days now. She’s not bleeding anymore although her gums still look red but she isn’t complaining of pain.

There’s still 2 small cavities left in her teeth which need to be cleaned and filled. We have an appointment a month from now. I hope Clarisse won’t give us a hard time then.

Skipped meeting up with my best friends this Chinese New Year

This Chinese New Year we did not visit our friends much. Two of my best friends, one of whom comes back from Singapore every year would usually get together for some catching up. But this year I decided not to attend because Clarisse has a bad cough and baby Edward has yet to recover from a cold. I do not want to spread the bugs to them because they are both pregnant – 7 months and 4 months.

I don’t know if we would be able to meet up next Chinese New Year. They’ll be so busy taking care of their babies I’m sure. And it’s such a hassle travelling with a newborn baby. We joked about skipping next year’s meet and look forward to 2013. I’m definitely looking forward to it coz by then, there’ll be lots of kids around.
