My new Android phone Samsung Galaxy Wonder

I bought myself a new toy last week: Samsung Galaxy Wonder! My first Android smartphone. And my most expensive phone to date. I was never really into phones but my husband suggested I give Android a try. The cheapest Android phone by Samsung is the Galaxy Mini, but it will be replaced by a newer entry model very soon, the Galaxy Y. The Mini was my pick but my husband didn’t like the small resolution screen. So the next step up is the Galaxy Ace, with a much bigger screen and higher resolution. But the store assistant told us to add a bit more money and get Galaxy Wonder, a much better phone than the aging Galaxy Ace. I am very pleased with the Wonder.

The most demanding apps are usually graphic-intensive games. I don’t know if my Galaxy W could cope with those but it had no problems with Angry Birds or Cut The Rope. Gameplay was very smooth.

The function I use most so far is the 5MP camera to shoot both stills and 720p video clips. Photo image quality is good and more than sufficient for 4R sized prints. 720p video are good too but I find it lacking in sharpness. Still it was much better than my digicam’s 640×480 pixel videos.

One more week to school holidays

One more week to go before the big school holidays. Looking back, I can’t believe how fast the year have passed. It felt like just yesterday when we send Clarisse to her first day in school and feeling so happy she didn’t gave us the first-day-of-school blues. The entire class was chaotic with kids crying and shouting for their parent’s attention.

Next year, Clarisse won’t be joining most of her current classmates. Classes will be divided into English and Chinese. We registered Clarisse for the Chinese classes hoping she’d be exposed to Chinese as much as possible in school. I hope she won’t cry when school reopens when she see her new teachers and classmates.

Wow. Just one more week and she’d be home like every day. With her around, Edward is more active and playful. The house will be a lot noisier than usual. More headaches for us.

Hope the kids are healthy for our family get together

My sisters and parents have plans for a get together in KL by the end of this month. All I hope now is Clarisse and Edward won’t get sick. A few months ago, we were supposed to go to Genting Highlands but Clarisse came down with fever a day before the trip. Slight fever in the morning progressed into high fever by night so we had to cancel the trip. We had everything packed and rooms booked. The kids too were excited and looking forward to the trip. The next morning, we headed to the doctor’s clinic instead. It took several days for Clarisse to get well and it was a terrible weekend.

Foreign maid bans

Cambodian government has recently banned their women from working as house maids in Malaysia due to reports of physical abuse and rape. The Indonesian maid ban is still in effect and no word yet on when it will be lifted. These events will surely lead to one thing: pay rise for maids. I have plans to hire a maid should we be blessed with another baby. With government policies complicating matters in hiring foreign maids, I fear two things might happen. It will cost more money to hire maids. Maid agencies may start to charge more for their services. Also I’ve heard horrible delays in delivering maids to their clients. It happened to my mom-in-law. It’s been a year since they paid their maid agency an upfront fee, and until today, no maid arrive. The usual excuses given is governments giving them a hard time and there’s nothing they can do.

After helping me out with Clarisse and Edward, my mother said she will not be able to help me during confinement and the baby’s first few months. I will be pretty much on our own. It is unfortunate but I understand. She’s dealing with athritis and may be too old for the back-breaking activities involved in taking care of an infant.

Our decision to hire a maid, at least for the first two years after a baby, is definitely made out of necessity. Life is already hectic enough with two kids. I cannot imagine our situation should a third one arrive.

Who is buying Najib’s ISA repeal?

There is no doubt in my mind all UMNO ministers are hypocrites, with Najib leading the pack. Najib recently announce ISA will be repealed to take Malaysia’s democracy to new highs. To make Malaysia the best democratic country in the world. You may go ahead and ROTFL.

If you buy Najib’s bullshit, then you are big idiot. His ISA repeal announcement is closely followed by plans to introduce two new laws that will embody the ISA spirit, that is detention without trial. That’s Najib’s promise to his fellow UMNO men. Many UMNO corrupts will be behind bars if not for ISA and EO to shut up the opposition and prevent the wheel of true justice from turning.

To further convince you Najib’s insincerity, the police have been instructed to charge PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu for his Bukit Kepong tragedy remarks under criminal defamation charges. Mat Sabu voiced his alternative view of our history. UMNO pounced on it and show the opposition that even without ISA laws, they have the legal means, by hook or by crook, to silence whoever disagrees with UMNO.

Many more similar incidents to violate human rights and free speech will follow. With or without ISA. The draconian law was enacted several decades ago with good intentions. The problem is, who’s using it now to their political advantage. It should be clear to us to get rid of ISA, UMNO must fall.

Grocery shopping in peace

My weekly round of grocery shopping at Tesco these days are a lot quicker and a lot more pleasant. I no longer tow two naughty and hyperactive kids while I shop. They are now my husband’s responsibility at the toys aisle.

Edward used to be very clingy. Everywhere he goes, I have to be near. He’d make sure I’m by his side wherever he goes. So he has to be in the trolley when I shop. Trouble was, he can’t sit still for more than 10 minutes. Not even toys or books can keep him occupied long enough for me to shop comfortably.

But now Clarisse and Edward shoot off to the toys and book section the minute we walk into Tesco. Edward no longer require my company and is perfectly fine as long as there are toys and books to keep him occupied. Daddy keeps an eye on them while I take care of my shopping list. If I rush, I could finish my shopping in 15 mins. That won’t be possible with two trouble making kids in tow.

Huge crowd at dim sum street during holidays

Leong Sin Nam street in Ipoh is well known for it’s dim sum outlets, enjoying a steady flow of dim sum crowd. During festive holidays, you won’t believe the massive crowd. My parents and sisters went there at 7am today and all the dim sum outlets were already full, with long queues of crowd waiting for tables. Cars jammed up the entire street they had to park two blocks away. So they gave up on the more popular dim sum outlets along Leong Sin Nam road and looked around for other dim sum shops closeby. I have heard due to their immense popularity and crowd, there is a drop in food quality in some popular dim sum shops. And the service is terrible, especially during the holidays.

Edward, Angry Birds and Thomas and Friends

Edward loves Angry Birds and Thomas the Tank Engine. He goes nuts whenever he sees either of them when we’re shopping so we avoid them like a plague.

We bought nearly all the birds that are in the Angry Birds presently. One time Edward was so infatuated with them, he would wake up in the middle of the night and look for them birds. He insists all his Angry Birds to be by his side on the bed. He won’t continue sleeping if even one of them is missing.

And lately, he loves Thomas and Friend shows, particularly the sing-a-long songs. Of course Thomas related merchandise too, unfortunately. A Thomas and Friends diecast train is really expensive considering how small and plain they are. Imagine they cost 3 to 4 times more than a Matchbox diecast cars.

Thankfully though, a week ago I managed to buy 5 Thomas and Friends diecast trains at a fraction of it’s original price from a friend. I don’t know how she manage to get them but I’m grateful to pay only a third for those toy trains.

No one could guess Edward is nearly two

Edward is 22 months now but not a single person I’ve met think he looks his age. It’s because he’s yet to grow much hair. I see newborn with more hair on their head than Edward. When I tell people he’s nearly two, they are usually very surprised.

And because I’m so used to Edward being such a babyface, I’m surprised some of the toddlers I met are younger than him. Several times I asked Edward to call them ‘koh koh’. Turns out they are a few months younger than Edward.

Edward nears terrible two

Edward is starting to show signs of terrible two. He is nearly 22 months old now. We are about to face another terrible two toddler and we’re terrified. Having went through Clarisse’s terrible two stage, I kinda know what to expect. But what terrifies me is that Edward is more aggressive than his sister by far.

Clarisse, even at two, has a softer side. Her problems at that time were mainly seeking attention. I was pregnant with Edward and after he was born, that’s when Clarisse started to become a handful. Thankfully though, she loves her brother and never once hit him badly despite him taking lots of our attention away from her. She yearned for my attention and care but with Edward around, I just couldn’t be there for her 24/7. I’m glad she is over that stage now.

With Edward now, we’ll be dealing with much more aggression. I dread what we’re about to face in the coming months. I’m not that bothered by what mischieves he’ll be up to alone, it’s when the two of them are together that drives me up the wall. Never an hour goes by the two of them won’t fight. And most of the time when they do fight, Edward is the one to blame. I’m bracing myself for more of these fights.
