China has earned bragging rights by successfully sending a Chinese astronaut to outer space and they’re certainly flaunting it. And barely a month ago, they had another history highlight with their first Olympics.

Unfortunately, the only lasting impression China has made recently is the blunders made during the Olympics. The fake Chinese kid singing, or miming another girl’s voice just because she is prettier than the one behind the scene actually singing the song. Then we have the fake firework pre-recorded add-ons. The gymnastics where we saw Chinese gymnasts swept nearly all the gold medals but whether or not they deserved it is debatable.

Even the Olympic blunders fail to overshadow the mother of all scandals in recent weeks, melamine tainted milk supply used in baby milk formula which resulted in over 50K babies sick with kidney illnesses, hundreds in critical condition and 4 deaths.

China’s manufacturing and business practises had always been notorious for its lack of quality and ethics. But this toxic milk scandal is simply unfathomable as far as I’m concerned.

Being a parent myself to a 15 month old baby girl, I could not bring myself to imagine how distraught those affected parents must be in wake of a crisis like that, let alone those who’s baby is sick from drinking tainted milk. The trust given to government and manufacturers to supply basic good quality food products has been betrayed. And the price being paid is simply too high. Innocent babies suffer the consequences of greedy, corrupt and unethical business practises. Authorities have nabbed those involved in the scandal and the suspects are facing death penalties. What about the corrupt government officials involved? I hope they too get punished to the same extent.

10 years on from now, I will not remember the Olympic achievements of Chinese athletes nor the event’s grandeur. I will not remember the name of Chinese spacemen who get blasted out to space. But I assure you I will always remember the name San Lu, the entire toxic milk scandal that has rocked a corrupt China and all the innocent babies it has affected. My heart goes out to all parents who’s baby is affected by tainted milk.
