The great Malaysian fuel hike
Do bear with my foul mood at this time of writing. Our Barisan Nasional government has just announced a significant price hike for petrol this evening. Spiking close to 40% increase come midnight.
I was on my way home from groceries shopping at 6pm when I received an SMS about the fuel hike. As expected, petrol stations along my way home were jammed by motorists queueing up to fill their tanks. It would take forever to wait for our turn. By then I’m sure it’ll be way past baby Clarisse’s usual dinner and bath time to get her ready for bed so we decided not to fill up. It’ll cost me RM20 more for a full tank tomorrow.
I’m sure most of us are bracing for a huge fuel hike that is expected to hit around August. But to be hit at full brunt when it was suddenly implemented today has definitely shocked me. The first thought that came to my mind is, aren’t we a net exporter of crude oil? Aren’t Malaysians supposed to be enjoying the billions of dollars brought in by our natural resource? Why are we comparing ourselves to oil-importing nations and share their plight? I feel cheated as a Malaysian.
Global oil prices is spiking, that’s a given. Oil-importing nations are suffering. On the other hand, oil producing nations are cashing in by the bulk and so should our very own Petronas. Then why are Malaysians are forced to pay through our noses for our very own natural resource oil? Just look at the fuel prices at other oil-producing nations here. We should be questioning how the heck are Petronas funds are being used by our federal government.
Our economy looks to be headed for an even worst recession no doubt, thanks to Barisan Nasional government. It appears that Barisan Nasional has yet to get the message that Malaysian citizens are suffering in terms of bread and butter issues. If I hear another BN minister utter the same old “Change your lifestyle” bullshit again, I’ll puke my guts out. “Change of government” seems to be more appropriate from now. For the sake of our future and most importantly, our children’s future!
