Traveling tips and precautions for pregnant women

The second trimester, that is between months four to six, is the most suitable time to travel for expecting mums. To be on the safer side, getting your doctor’s permission is recommended.

I stayed at home for the pass five months without going any where. My husband suggested we go for a holiday to relieve stress. This is definitely a good idea cause it will be even difficult to go for a holiday after baby is born. Here are some planning tips and precautions I took to ensure a safe traveling:

1) Pack for your Pregnancy survival kit. Things that I packed for my survival kit are :

  • Prenatal multi vitamins
  • Packets of pregnancy skimmed milk
  • Small jar of wheat germ to enrich white bread or cereal just in case I could not get any whole grain bread
  • A pair of comfortable shoes roomy enough to accommodate feet swelled by long hours of walking or sightseeing
  • Medicine prescribed by your OB

2) Get a name of local obstetricians practising in the city you’re traveling to. You can obtain some leads from your regular local OB or contact the local medical association.

3) Bring along of your medical information card that listing your blood group, medication that you’re taking now, type of allergic, your doctor’s contact and also a photocopy of your antenatal card.

4) Do not postpone trips to the toilet because this will encourage urinary tract infection or constipation. Go to the toilet as often as you need . Trust me, you will feel the urge to pass urine very often when you’re pregnant.

5) Do some walking when sitting too long, this can restrict the blood circulation in your legs especially when traveling by plane or train. If traveling by car, do not go for a stretch of more than 2 hours without stopping.

6) Do prepare some nutritious snacks and a thermos of juice or milk handy for when hunger strikes.

7) Get a special back-supporting cushion and neck support pillow to make yourself comfortable when sitting in a car, plane or train.

A proper planing will lead to a safer journey.
